US Vice President JD Vance expressed concern over the insufficient protection of Greenland by Denmark at the Pituffik base in Greenland. He noted the growing interest of Russia and China in Arctic routes and natural resources, supporting the US intention to strengthen regional security through investment in military ships and icebreakers.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, appointed Premier of Greenland, stated: "This is a time when we as a population are under pressure". Ahead of JD Vance's visit, four out of five parliamentary parties in Greenland signed an agreement to form a new coalition government. "Together we are at our strongest," noted Nielsen.
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed hope for close cooperation during unnecessarily conflictual times, noting Denmark's desire to collaborate with the USA on defense and security matters. However, she emphasized: "Greenland belongs to Greenlanders."
