US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension of additional trade tariffs for most countries around the world that have not retaliated against Washington. Trump wrote about this on April 9 in social media Truth Social. During this period, such countries will face a "significantly reduced tariff" of 10%. Over 75 countries worldwide called on the US to conduct talks regarding trade and trade barriers.
Trump also announced raising import taxes from China to 125% instead of the current 104%. The American president accused Beijing of "disrespecting" world markets. These decisions were implemented immediately, causing harsh criticism from politicians and economists worldwide, as well as a drop in stock market indices and oil prices.
The agency dpa notes that Trump's decision is the most aggressive step in his trade policy. China responded with similar measures, imposing tariffs of 84%, while the EU agreed on retaliatory taxes starting mid-April.
