US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of 25 percent customs duties on imported vehicles, which will take effect on April 2. This was reported on March 26. The tariffs will not apply to vehicles produced in the United States.

The largest automakers in the US - General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis - produce about half of all cars in the country. However, more than 59 percent of components for car assembly come from abroad.

The president is convinced that new tariffs will encourage automakers to expand their production within the United States.
