Six European countries — Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom — have stated their readiness to impose new sanctions against Russia. This was announced in a joint declaration by foreign ministers following a meeting on January 26 in Madrid.

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support for Ukraine. The document notes: “Many European partners, including members of this group, have undertaken significant additional obligations to support Ukraine militarily and plan similar commitments for the future.”

The countries stated their readiness to exert further pressure on Russia, using all available tools ‘including the adoption of new sanctions’. The text also states: “We confirm that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security, become better prepared, and be able to handle current and future challenges.”
