Scientists from the Beijing Earthquake Agency have warned of potential major seismic events in Asia. The research results published on March 20 in the journal 'Geodesy and Geodynamics' point to the possible beginning of a new period of seismic activity. Scientists analyzed data over 150 years, starting from 1879, identifying six main earthquake periods and established a correlation between these periods and changes in Earth's rotation speed. "The region may now be entering into an emerging phase of a new seismically active period," the scientists stated.
On March 23rd, one week after the publication of research results, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred in Myanmar. The tremors were felt not only within Myanmar but also in Thailand's capital Bangkok and China. As a result, 3564 people died, 5012 were injured, and another 210 are still listed as missing. Buildings and infrastructure across the country were damaged.
