The South Korean company Samsung Electronics has achieved changes in the labor legislation of its country, becoming the first company whose employees in the chip development department have the right to work up to 64 hours a week. The new approval was granted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor of South Korea and allows bypassing the standard limit of 52 hours that previously slowed down project execution in Samsung's System LSI division.
In March 2025, the government of South Korea reviewed the rules for the semiconductor sector. According to new conditions, employees of Samsung will be able to work up to 64 hours a week for the first three months and up to 60 hours in the following three months.
Samsung plans to use the additional time to accelerate the development of advanced chips used in smartphones, computers, and artificial intelligence systems.
