The American company Howmet Aerospace from Pittsburgh has declared force majeure due to new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. These duties, ranging from 10% to 50%, may affect Howmet Aerospace's obligations to Airbus and Boeing. As a major player in the $150 billion aviation industry, the company is taking this step as a precautionary measure and may temporarily refrain from fulfilling part of its contracts. Howmet Aerospace is an important supplier of parts for engine models CFM56, LEAP, and GE90. The company offers to discuss cost-sharing with clients due to the new tariffs. Experts doubt the legal justification for the force majeure, as discussions about the duties began in 2023. This is the first case where a major supplier has taken such a step due to trade tariffs, which may seriously impact aircraft manufacturers who are already facing shortages of parts and raw materials.
