The Hungarian National Assembly approved the country's withdrawal from the International Criminal Court during a meeting on April 5, 2025. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated: «With this decision, we are refusing to be part of a politicized institution that has lost its impartiality and authority.» After the corresponding law comes into effect, Hungary will send a notification of its withdrawal to the UN. The decision will take effect in 12 months. Hungary signed the Rome Statute on July 17, 1999, and ratified it on April 28, 2001. The country's government announced plans to withdraw on April 5, 2025, the day of a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was subject to an international arrest warrant issued by the ICC. Hungary became a state that ignored the court's requirements.
