The San Francisco-based startup Glacier raised $16 million in a Series A round led by Ecosystem Integrity Fund with participation from Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, New Enterprise Associates, and AlleyCorp. The funds will be used to expand the deployment of waste recycling robots equipped with computer vision and machine learning technologies. The devices sort more than 30 types of materials at a rate of 45 items per minute. The robots are already installed in six cities: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Phoenix, and Seattle. Founded in 2019, the company develops solutions to increase the efficiency of material recovery facilities (MRFs) without modifying the infrastructure. “Since nearly 80 percent of household waste is not recycled, there is an urgent need for innovative solutions. Glacier’s AI-focused approach offers a practical and affordable way to improve recycling operations,” said Sasha Brown, partner at Ecosystem Integrity Fund. The investment will allow the company to expand its staff and continue developing its technologies.
