The European Union is exploring the possibility of creating its own operating system EU OS based on Fedora Linux. The initiative aims to decrease dependence on Microsoft and its Windows OS amid geopolitical tensions.
The concept of EU OS includes integrating the Fedora Linux distribution with the KDE Plasma desktop environment. Despite the name, EU OS technically does not constitute a new operating system but represents a concept for demonstrating the feasibility of deploying Linux in a typical EU public sector organization.
The main goal of EU OS is to form a unified Linux platform. The system will allow modifications at various levels: national, regional, industry-specific, and organizational. It is planned to create a common working environment and a standardized user and data management system.
"EU OS is a concept for demonstrating the feasibility of deploying Fedora-based Linux in a typical EU public sector organization. Other organizations with similar or less stringent requirements may also benefit from this concept," as noted on the project's website.
