The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), associated with Elon Musk, has fired around 30 employees from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Among those laid off were members of the 'Office of Vehicle Automation Safety.' One of the laid-off individuals stated: "The cuts may weaken NHTSA's ability to understand autonomous driving technologies." Another employee found the situation ironic, referring to Tesla, whose Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems are under investigation by NHTSA, also developing self-driving solutions. The NHTSA is investigating several incidents involving Tesla, including cases of FSD system usage and Actually Smart Summon parking features. Families of those who died in accidents have sent an open letter to the Transportation Secretary, urging them to maintain accident reporting rules for autonomous vehicles set under the Biden administration. Both DOGE and Tesla declined to comment on the situation.
