American glass manufacturer Corning has introduced a new generation of protective coatings called Gorilla Glass Ceramic, made from a combination of regular glass and nanocrystalline ceramics. According to the company, Gorilla Glass Ceramic is several times more resistant to scratches and rough object impacts compared to other aluminosilicate glasses.

During an experiment, a smartphone with Gorilla Glass Ceramic was dropped 10 times from a height of one meter onto a surface mimicking asphalt. There were no signs of damage on the screen after the tests.

The new glass is fired at a temperature of 750 degrees Celsius. It can be used as protection for smartphone screens, smartwatch displays, and camera lenses.

The first devices to use Gorilla Glass Ceramic will be Motorola smartphones, which will be introduced in spring 2025.
